In 1933, Samuel Blanc invented a unique sewer cleaning machine using a 1/6 HP Maytag washing machine motor, roller skate wheels, and a 3/8 inch cable to turn the blades. This device utilized special blades, or "knives," to remove tree roots from sewer lines without the need for digging. A year later, his wife Lettie named the prototype "Roto-Rooter." Founded in 1935, Roto-Rooter has grown to become the largest provider of plumbing, drain cleaning, and water cleanup services in North America. In 1980, the Blanc family sold the company to Chemed Corporation, and Roto-Rooter relocated its headquarters to Cincinnati. However, the company continued to manufacture its renowned Roto-Rooter drain cleaning machines, cables, blades, and other components at its factory in West Des Moines, Iowa.
