Professionalism: 4.0
Business Description
The land for the golf course, donated by M.C. Gryzmish to the City of Miami Beach on January 4, 1928, underwent dredging and filling to create the man-made island for the course. By 1939, Normandy Shores Isle was created, and the first plans for the golf course were drawn up by Howard Toomy and William S. Flynn. The golf course and new clubhouse were completed, and the City of Miami Beach held a dedication ceremony on December 18, 1941. Throughout World War II, most of Miami Beach transformed into a training camp for the U.S. Army-Air Forces, but the postwar boom marked the heyday of Normandy Shores Golf Club. In 1956, the city hired Mark Manahah to redesign the course, attracting famous golfers like Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Peter Thompson, as well as notorious figures. Over the last 50 years, the City of Miami Beach maintained the course, making it a popular spot for golfers in the surrounding areas. In 2008, the city spent over $9 million to renovate the course, hiring world-renowned architect Arthur Hills to redesign it and restore its former glory.
